Everything you need to know about Fontane Pubbliche

Finding drinking water near you takes a few seconds:

  1. Open the Web App or install the Android app
  2. Allow location access when asked
  3. The map centres on where you are and shows every fountain around you
  4. Tap a marker to see the details: address, water status and photos

You can also pan the map by hand to check a neighbourhood before you get there, anywhere in Italy or in the world.

Yes. Public tap water in Italy is treated and monitored, and drinking from a public fountain is normal and free. Roman nasoni run all day long and locals refill their bottles at them.

Where water is not meant for drinking, fountains carry a "acqua non potabile" sign. Those are marked as not drinkable on our map too, so you know before you walk there.

Yes. The same map covers public toilets and restrooms, with free or paid access marked on each one.

Switch to the toilets layer on the map, or open the page of the city you are visiting to see the full list.

There is no native iOS app yet. It will be built as soon as we raise enough to cover the App Store publishing costs. If you want to speed that up, you can make a donation.

In the meantime the Web App works straight from Safari on your iPhone.

Tip: add it to your Home Screen and it behaves like a native app:

  1. Open the site in Safari
  2. Tap the share icon (the square with the arrow)
  3. Choose "Add to Home Screen"

You get a dedicated icon and it opens full screen.

If a published photo shows inappropriate content, personal data (a licence plate, a recognisable face) or anything else that should not be there, you can ask us to change it.

How to do it:

  1. Email [email protected]
  2. Include the ID of the place (you find it on its detail page)
  3. Tell us briefly why you are asking

Every request is reviewed and handled as fast as we can. Your privacy, and everyone else's, matters to us.

There are a few ways:

  • Contribute: add fountains and toilets you come across, update the ones already there
  • Spread the word: share the app with friends and family
  • Leave a review: a good rating on the store helps other people find it
  • Donate: if you want to support development directly, you can do it via PayPal

Anything helps keeping the project alive and free for everyone.

The app needs a connection to load the map and the data. Once an area is loaded it may stay cached for a short while, but not reliably.

If you are travelling, a basic data plan or an eSIM is enough: 3G is plenty.
